Project Background

A public transportation fleet in Southeast Asia needed a more reliable way to improve driver safety, monitor vehicle operations, and respond quickly to incidents.
Traditional GPS tracking could provide vehicle location information, but it could not show what was happening inside or around the vehicle. With busy urban traffic, motorcycles and pedestrians, passenger safety concerns, and demanding tropical weather conditions, the fleet required a more comprehensive monitoring solution.
HBOIOT provided an intelligent video telematics solution combining AI-powered mobile DVRs, multi-channel cameras, GPS positioning, 4G connectivity, ADAS, and DMS. The solution enabled fleet operators to move from basic vehicle tracking to real-time video-based fleet management and proactive safety monitoring.
Project Challenges
The fleet faced several challenges associated with operating commercial vehicles in densely populated Southeast Asian cities.
1. Complex Urban Traffic
City buses operate in environments with heavy traffic, motorcycles, pedestrians, frequent lane changes, and unpredictable road conditions. Drivers need to maintain constant attention, while fleet managers need better visibility into potentially dangerous driving situations.
2. Driver Fatigue and Distracted Driving
Long operating hours can increase the risk of driver fatigue and distraction. Traditional vehicle tracking systems cannot identify behaviors such as drowsiness, mobile phone use, smoking, or failure to wear a seatbelt.
3. Limited Visibility Around the Vehicle
Large commercial vehicles have significant blind spots. A single forward-facing camera cannot provide sufficient visibility of the driver’s cabin, passenger area, sides, and rear of the vehicle.
4. Passenger Safety and Incident Management
When disputes, theft, medical emergencies, or other incidents occur inside a vehicle, fleet operators need reliable video evidence and a rapid way to notify the command center.
5. Harsh Operating Conditions
The tropical climate in Southeast Asia exposes onboard electronic equipment to high temperatures, humidity, heavy rainfall, and continuous 24/7 operation. Fleet hardware therefore needs to provide stable performance under demanding conditions.
HBOIOT Video Telematics Solution

To address these challenges, HBOIOT deployed an integrated AI video telematics solution built around intelligent MDVR and commercial vehicle AI dashcam technologies.
The system combines video recording, edge AI, GPS positioning, 4G LTE communication, multi-channel monitoring, and cloud connectivity into one fleet management solution.
1. AI-Powered Driver and Road Monitoring
The AI-enabled system supports both Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS).
ADAS continuously monitors the road environment and can provide alerts for potentially dangerous situations, including:
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- Speed sign recognition
DMS monitors the driver’s condition and behavior through an in-cabin camera. The system can identify potential fatigue and distraction behaviors such as prolonged eye closure, yawning, mobile phone use, smoking, and unfastened seatbelts.
When an abnormal behavior is detected, the system can provide an immediate voice alert, helping drivers correct unsafe behavior before it develops into an accident.
2. Multi-Channel Video Monitoring
For public transportation vehicles, a single camera is often insufficient.
The solution supports 4-channel and multi-channel video configurations, allowing cameras to cover different areas of the vehicle.
Video footage is stored locally using high-capacity storage media, helping preserve important evidence even when network connectivity is temporarily unavailable.
3. Real-Time 4G LTE and GPS Connectivity
The onboard equipment connects vehicles with the fleet command center through 4G LTE and GPS.
Fleet managers can remotely monitor vehicle locations and access live video through a web-based platform or mobile application.
This allows operators to investigate incidents more efficiently and respond to emergencies with greater speed.
4. Emergency SOS for Rapid Incident Response
Passenger and driver safety was an important consideration for the project.
An emergency SOS button provides a direct communication channel between the vehicle and the fleet command center.
When the SOS button is activated, the system can trigger an emergency alert while providing relevant vehicle information, including GPS location and live video. Operators can then assess the situation remotely and coordinate an appropriate response.
5. Designed for Southeast Asian Climate Conditions
Operating commercial vehicles in Southeast Asia requires equipment capable of handling demanding environmental conditions.
HBOIOT’s industrial-grade MDVR and fleet dashcam solutions are designed for continuous vehicle operation and can incorporate ruggedized hardware and fanless cooling structures to improve reliability in high-temperature environments.
Solution Configuration
The project can be configured around HBOIOT’s commercial vehicle video telematics products, including:

VT08 AI Mobile DVR
An intelligent mobile DVR designed for commercial vehicle video monitoring, supporting multi-channel video input, AI functions, GPS positioning, and network connectivity.
T8 4-Channel Fleet Dash Cam
A multi-channel AI dashcam solution designed for fleet applications, providing video monitoring, driver behavior analysis, and road safety functions.
The exact hardware configuration can be customized according to vehicle type, camera requirements, storage capacity, network environment, and fleet management platform.

From Vehicle Tracking to Intelligent Fleet Management
This Southeast Asian public transportation project demonstrates how modern video telematics can extend fleet management beyond basic GPS tracking.
By combining AI-powered MDVR, commercial vehicle dashcams, ADAS, DMS, multi-channel cameras, 4G LTE, GPS, and emergency communication, fleet operators can gain greater visibility into their vehicles while improving driver and passenger safety.
For public transportation and commercial fleets operating in demanding environments, HBOIOT’s video telematics solutions provide a practical foundation for building safer, smarter, and more connected fleets.
